Can’t seem to keep up the motivation to exercise? While many of us understand the importance of physical activity, in the long run, exercise is something that many of us still see as a chore. The conveniences of modern life have made it hard for many of us to naturally get any physical activity – many of us work office jobs and have cars to get us around, whilst household gadgets have taken the physical effort out of cleaning. Because of this, many of us now have to go out of our way to exercise. Here are just a few reasons why you may be struggling to find the motivation to work out.
You have no clear goal
Telling yourself that you want to ‘get fit’ isn’t a clear enough goal. By giving yourself a tangible goal, you can more easily work towards it. You could aim to complete a physical challenge such as a half marathon or you could try to aim to strengthen up your body until you can deadlift a certain weight. Alternatively, if you want to lose weight, you could aim to fit in a certain dress size or give yourself a target weight to beat on the scales. By having these goals, you can more easily track your progress and be more motivated.
You’re expecting results too fast
Many of us are also too impatient when it comes to exercises – it can take months for some people to notice any significant weight loss or muscle gain. Start focusing on the little gains from week to week even if they’re not physically noticeable such as losing a pound or being able to run that little bit further. You also shouldn’t be put off by weeks where you appear to take a backward step – everyone has these weeks, just as everyone has good weeks.
You have no-one around you regarding motivation to exercise
Not having the support of other people can make motivating yourself to exercise harder. Having a personal trainer can sometimes be a good incentive – look to join the best personal training classes in your area and see what impact it makes. You could also consider group exercise with other people or even find yourself an exercise buddy. By training with other people, you’ll have someone to spur you on to get off the couch when having a lazy day.
You’re choosing forms of exercise that you don’t enjoy
Most people don’t enjoy exercise because they choose the wrong forms of exercise. You don’t have to go to the gym or go jogging in all-weather to keep fit. Instead, find forms of exercise that appeal to you. You could try a new sport such as squash or fencing, or you could buy a treadmill for home so that you can keep up your running routine in winter without having to brave the outdoors. By making exercise fun you’ll be more motivated to do it.
You don’t make time for exercise
You don’t need a ton of free time to exercise. Many exercises can be combined with day-to-day activities. There are exercises you can do at an office desk, exercises you can do with a baby and exercises you can do whilst performing household chores. By combining activities with day-to-day activities, you may find that you don’t have to take free time out of your day to work out.
