Could anyone please recommend a weight training plan for a sport-specific event (Half-Marathon)? I would like to build my strength to run faster.

carlosfromspain If you were talking about events that imply sprinting then a lower body focused workout with power type exercises may offer benefit, but a half marathon is an endurance event, running faster throughout the event is not a matter of strength at all, you want to train for higher V02max, higher lactate threshold and better running economy, not lift weights.

dneisler85 I have done a few marathons and understand your struggle, I went through the same struggle after my first run. Everything I read is lift heavy like you were bulking. I also would lift 3-4 days during the last couple of training cycle. Some days I would go run right after leg day. Don’t be upset while your body acclimates and your run times go down for a stretch and your body feels it, don’t be afraid to take a rest day. Leg days I would hit squats, calf raises, extension, curls and deadlifts to end it. I’ve read from a few places deadlifts are a huge lift for runners. If you don’t have the time with the running schedule I would just consider some HIIT workouts with some burpees, air squats or lunges mixed in 1-2 days a week for about 20 minutes. If you’re in the middle of the training cycle Id probably avoid that this round and after the race start hitting the gym hard with runs to build for the next cycle. But this is all just my opinion and what worked for me after some research, you might have to tweak it to fit you.

Oakkung thanks for your response! I completely understand that running economy, VO2 max, and lactate threshold are key for endurance performance. I already have a structured running plan focusing on those aspects. However, I’ve noticed that my muscular endurance, especially in my lower body, sometimes feels like a limiting factor in maintaining speed over long distances. I’m looking for a strength training plan to complement my running training, helping to improve my running efficiency, fatigue resistance, and injury prevention. Do you have any specific recommendations for weight training that supports endurance athletes?
